What is pipe bursting?
Pipe bursting is a trenchless technology method of sewer pipe repair and replacement.
This method does not use a traditional trench as older forms of sewer repair utilize. This method uses a dug hole at each end of the sewer line that is requiring the repair.
Pipe bursting uses a large cable snaked through the existing sewer line, then a hydraulic ‘tugger machine’ pulls on the cable while the existing pipe is ‘burst’ out of the way using a large expansion head. The burst pipe is replaced with a brand new pipe during the bursting process, as the new pipe is pulled at the same time the old pipe is burst out of the way. What is left is a new sewer line of considerable strength and longevity.
The pipe used in the pipe bursting method is called, HDPE, which stands for High-Density Polyethylene. This replacement pipe offers an extremely rugged and long lasting pipe repair solution as witnessed by the following photograph:
